2007-2008 Season

Kim Collins, Flute

Local flutist Kim Collins began her flute studies in New Jersey with Barbara Shupp, and went on to graduate from the Hartt School of Music. Her primary teachers include John Wion and Keith Underwood. While at Hartt, Kim was the recipient of many awards including the Solomon Elsner Award (for graduating with the highest grade point average) and the Departmental Excellence Award for Winds, Brass and Percussion. She also appeared in concert with the Emerson String Quartet as a winner of their annual competition.

Shortly after her time at Hartt, Kim was a finalist in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the first and only major competition she ever entered.

Kim is Principal Flutist of theWaterbury Symphony Orchestra, Associate Principal Flutist with the Vermont Symphony, and freelances with the Springfield, Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport Symphonies. She performs with touring Broadway shows at the Hartford Bushnell Theater, the Stamford Palace Theater, and the New Haven Shubert Theater. She has been heard performing symphonic pop and rock shows with artists such as, Il Divo, the Irish Tenors, Peter Cetera, LeeAnn Rimes, Peter Frampton, Yes, and Brian Wilson. Kim has toured as soloist with the New England Symphonic Ensemble throughout the United States, China, Europe, and the Middle East, including an appearance at the Jerash International Festival, but now prefers to stay closer to home.

As a member of the Collins Project, a flute and percussion duo with her husband, Steve Collins, Kim has performed throughout the area and has premiered many new works for flute and percussion. The Collins Project were featured guest artists and lecturers at Cameron University’s New Music Festival in Lawton, Oklahoma and have made many local appearances as guest artists.

During the past few years, Kim has returned to the stage as a recitalist and is enjoying the freedom of expression offered by performing in more intimate settings. Recent Connecticut recital appearances include: the Wolcott Classics, the Acoustic Cafe, United Church in Bridgeport, the Fairfield Theater, and Neighborhood Music School’s Bach’s Lunch Recital Series.

Kim is quite active as a teacher and clinician. She taught on the faculty of the Hartt School Community Division at the University of Hartford and currently teaches flute and chamber music at Fairfield University. She maintains additional studios at Choate Rosemary Hall and at her home in Trumbull, where she resides with her husband Steve (timpanist with the WSO) and the newest addition to their family, their beautiful son Jack.

This is Kim's third appearance as soloist with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra.
