Sunday, February 23rd 4 pm

'The Jazz Age', with international vocalist Stephanie Harrison and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra

2nd Concert of WSO's new Edmond Town Hall Series: Edmond Town Hall, Newtown

The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (WSO) is proud to present The Jazz Age, the second of three concerts in its new 2024-25 Edmond Town Hall Series, on Sunday, February 23rd, at 4:00 PM at Edmond Town Hall in Newtown. This special performance will mark the 100th anniversary of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, a novel that famously coined the term "Jazz Age" to describe the exuberant, rebellious spirit of the 1920s. It is only fitting that the WSO will pay tribute to this iconic era by bringing the music of the Jazz Age to life with an unforgettable concert of 1920s jazz standards.

A night of swinging hits and evocative melodies, The Jazz Age will feature the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra as a "jazz orchestra," blending the classical instrumentation of a full symphony with the improvisational flair of jazz. The concert will highlight the sounds of the Roaring Twenties, a time when jazz became the soundtrack of social revolution.

The evening will feature international soloist Stephanie Harrison, a celebrated vocalist whose powerful voice and captivating stage presence have made her a favorite among audiences worldwide. Harrison’s rendition of timeless jazz standards will take the audience on a journey through the music that defined an era.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Great Gatsby with this exciting performance," said Leif Bjaland, WSO's Music Director & Conductor. "The Jazz Age was a time of cultural transformation, and we’re honored to bring this period to life through the power of live music. From Gershwin to Ellington, the music of the 1920s was as innovative as it was captivating, and we can’t wait to share it with our community.”

The concert will feature a diverse program of jazz-infused compositions, including works by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Irving Berlin, as well as iconic tunes like “Rhapsody in Blue,” “Flapperette,” and “I’m Just Wild About Harry.” Audiences will experience the rich harmonies and rhythms of this exuberant era, all set in the elegant Edmond Town Hall, an iconic venue in Newtown that provides a perfect backdrop for the evening.

The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra's The Jazz Age is a must-see performance for both jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
