Waterbury Symphony to Kick Off the Holidays with 'Messiah & Magnificat’ Concert Sunday December 8th, 2024 @ 3pm

The WSO will kick off the holiday season with its 'Messiah and Magnificat' MasterWorks Concert with over 200 performers taking the stage to perform the revered holiday celebration of baroque brilliance of both Bach’s Magnificat and selections from Handel’s Messiah.  Patron's will experience the orchestral and choral brilliance that have made these masterpieces cherished seasonal favorites for centuries.

Now in his 30th anniversary with the Symphony, Maestro Leif Bjaland will conduct the WSO in collaboration with the acclaimed Hartford Chorale, under the direction of Jack Pott and four esteemed vocal soloists. Students from the Naugatuck Valley Choir will also join in the performance throughout the concert.  The memorable holiday concert will take place on Sunday, December 8th at 3pm, at CT State Community College, Naugatuck Valley’s Fine Arts Center, Waterbury.  [Formerly known as NVCC]

Handel’s Messiah has been hailed as a sacred oratorio for centuries. This momentous production will propel the audience into the spirit of the holiday with great emotional impact and an uplifting message to ring in the new year.

As one of his long-time favorite holiday music programs, Music Conductor Leif Bjaland shared his timely sentiments about Messiah. “Handel's Messiah has been performed without a pause since its composition in 1741. It endures because it has spoken through the centuries to our heartfelt belief that "the people who walk in darkness shall see a great light."  This light will once again be seen at NVCC with singers and instrumentalists as we bring to life the music of the divine.”

WSO’s Cultural Ambassador, Dr. Vincent de Luise will present a pre-concert lecture at 2:00 pm.
